Loopsider spoke with Marion Gallay during the Red Bull Paret Challenge in February 2025, in Les Orres. Here are some great moments from the interview, but check out the full video to find out who won the competition!

EcoleParet

What's that wooden thing?

That’s a paret—a real one. Back in the day, our grandparents used them to get to school in the mountains. It was super common—everyone had one in their garage. Depending on the region, the name changes. In the Aravis, we call it a paret, but if you go to the Vosges, for example, it's a girouette. Today, we’ve reinvented this traditional sled into a fun sport, just like skiing or snowshoeing.

Do artisans still make wooden parets in the mountains?

Yeah, for sure! These days, they add skis underneath because they glide way better than a metal strip. But for racing, we don’t use wooden parets—we go for something else.

How is the Yooner different?

There are a few key differences. First, the Yooner is allowed on ski slopes—it’s designed specifically for leisure and fun. It also has a balanced center of gravity, so if you fall, it won’t just slide away down the slope.

Let’s go! Time to learn how to ride the Yooner.

The good news? It only takes about five minutes to get the hang of it!

What’s the best position for steering?

Keep your legs lifted—if you don’t, you’ll end up buried in the snow! And try not to lean too far forward or to the sides. Stay upright to keep your balance and maintain control of your descent.

Is the Yooner available internationally?

Yes! There’s even a big Yooner community in New Zealand, where it’s become really popular.

How fast can it go?

The Yooner can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h, but that depends on the snow conditions and the slope.
